THE MOUNTAIN / DER BERG

Cho Oyu (8201m/26,907ft) is the sixth highest mountain in the world and lies in the Himalayan Mountains only 30km west of Everest. The summit is on the border of Nepal and Tibet (China).

In 1952 Eric Shipton explored the north-western region of Cho Oyu and on October 19, 1954 it was first ascended by the Austrians Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama via the north-ridge in Tibet.

Cho Oyu (8201m/26,907ft) ist der sechst höchste Berg der Welt und liegt im Himalaya nur 30km westlich von Everest. Seinen Gipfel teilen sich Nepal und Tibet (China).

1952 erkundete Eric Shipton die Nordwest Region des Cho Oyu und am 19. Oktober 1954 wurde er durch die Österreicher Herbert Tichy und Joseph Jöchler und der SHerpa Pasang Dawa Lama über die Nordseite erstbestiegen.

THE ROUTE / DIE ROUTE

Wir bestiegen Cho Oyu von Tibet aus via der Tichyroute (Nordwestgrat) besteigen. TOPOGRAPHISCHE KARTE

ABC 5700m:

The basecamp (BC) is at 4800m and is reached with Jeeps. From the BC Yaks carried our equipment up to the advanced base camp (ABC) at 5700m. Here, where the kitchen is located, we spent our restdays. Each climber had their individual tent to allow for some privacy.

Das Basislager (BC) liegt auf 4800m und ist mit Jeeps erreichbar. Von dort wurde mit Yaks unser Gepäck ins vorgeschobene Basislager (ABC) auf 5700m transportiert. Hier war der Ort, wo die Küche aufgebaucht wurde und wir unsere Rasttage verbrachten. Jeder Bergsteiger hatte sein eigenes Zelt um etwas Privatsphäre zu gewährleisten.

C1 6400m:

Camp 1 is located above the "Killerslope" an uncomfortable scree slope.

Das erste Hochlager liegt über dem "Killerhang", ein unangenehmer Schutthang .

C2 7100m:

In order to reach Camp 2 we had to overcome a ca. 20m 80° ice wall and a ca. 100m 40°-50° snow/ice slope which also ended in a short ice wall.

Auf der Strecke zum Lager 2 mussten wir eine ca. 20m 80° steile Eiswand und einen ca. 100m 40°-50° steilen Schnee/Eishang bewältigen, welcher auch in einer kurzen Eiswand endete.

C3 7500m:

Camp 3 was easily reached walking up a long and boring snow slope.

Lager 3 war leicht zu erreichen. Wir mussten einen langen langweiligen Schneehang hinaufgehen.

Summit 8201m:

Between Camp 3 and the summit we had to scramble up a rock face called the "yellow band" at about 7700m. Afterwards a rocky slope followed and a snow field. Another rocky passage had to be climbed and then we walked about 1km across the summit plateau to the summit. On May 14, 2007 at 1 p.m. Läxel and I reached the summit!

Zwischen Lager 3 und dem Gipfel muss das "Gelbe Band" eine Felspassage auf ca. 7700m überwunden werden. Danach folgte ein steiniger Hang und schließlich das große Schneefeld an der 8000er Grenze. Von dort musste eine weitere Felspassage überwunden werden und schließlich gings ca. 1km über das Gipfelplateau zum Gipfel. Am 14.Mai 2007 erreichten Läxel und ich den Gipfel!

ALTITUDE PROFIL / BESTEIGUNGSPROFIL

Below you find graphs which visualise how high we climbed on each day of our trekking tour and on our expedition. If you click on the profils a graph of bigger size will pop up. The y-axis views metres of altitude above the sea-level. On the x-axis for each day one location name is indicated. Each day is represented by three points: starting height, maximal height reached, and sleeping height.

Unten finden sich zwei Grafiken, welche zeigen wie hoch wir jeden Tag aufgestiegen sind während der Trekking Tour und der Expedition. Bei Anklicken des Profils erscheint eine größere Grafik. Die Y-Achse zeigt die Höhenmeter oberhalb des Meeresniveaus. Auf der X-Achse ist jeder Tag durch einen Ortsnamen dargestellt. Jeder Tag ist durch drei Punkte repräsentiert: Ausgangshöhe, erreichte maximale Höhe und Endhöhe.

SCHEDULE / DER ZEITPLAN

ACCLIMATISATION - Annapurna Trekking - March 24 to April 6

From March 24 to April 6 Ulli and Hannes, two friends from Vienna, and I went trekking in Nepal around Annapurna in order to acclimatise. We crossed the 5416m high Thorung-La Pass which prepared me for the expedition.

Von 24. März bis 6. April ging ich gemeinsam mit zwei Freunden, Ulli und Hannes aus Wien, in Nepal im Annapurnagebiet trekken. Der Trek führte uns über den 5416m hohen Thorung-La Pass. Damit akklimatisierte ich mich für die Expedition.

EXPEDITION - Cho Oyu - April 7 to May 21

On April 7 I met my expedition partners in Kathmandu. Our expedition team: Läxel from Wangen in Germany, Oliver from Bruck (Stmk), Franz from Wies (Stmk) and I am from Hinterbrühl (NÖ). Together we travelled by bus and jeep to Tibet. It took us a week to reach the basecamp since we stopped in Zangmu (2200m), Nyalam (3700m) and Tingri (4300m) in order to to acclimatise.

Finally, a jeep took us to the Chinese base-camp at 4800m from where we trekked to Interim Camp at 5400m and to Advanced Base Camp at 5700m, where we arrived on April 18.

The climbing period reached from April 19 to May 16. Overall, we climbed the mountain four times until we reached the top on May 14. On May 15 we returned to the ABC and the next day we trekked back to the interim camp (5400m) from where we were picked up by a truck to return to Tingri (4300m). After a short night we left Tingri at 2 a.m. to reach the Tibetan-Nepalese border in the morning and finally Kathmandu in the evening.

We spent a few days in Kathmandu eating lots of nice food, showering for the first time in six weeks and relaxing in the warm climate.

Am 7. April traf ich meine Expeditionspartner in Kathmandu. Unser Expeditionsteam: Läxl aus Wangen in Deutschland, Oliver von Bruck (Stmk), Franz von Wies (Stmk) und ich aus der Hinterbrühl (NÖ). Gemeinsam reisten wir per Bus udn Jeep nach Tibet. Es dauerte eine Woche bis wir das Basislager erreichten, da wir in Zangmu (2200), Nyalam (3700m) und Tingri (4300m) Halt machten um uns zu akklimatisieren.

Schließlich brachte uns ein Jeep ins chinesische Basislager auf 4800m von wo wir zum Interim Camp oder Fahrerlager trekkten und dann weiter ins Advanced Base Camp (ABC) auf 5700m, wo wir am 18.April ankamen.

Die Besteigung dauerte vom 19.April bis zum 16.Mai. Insgesamt bestiegen wir den Berg vier Mal bis wir den Gipfel am 14.Mai erreichten. Am 15. Mai stiegen wir ins ABC ab und Tags darauf trekkten wir zurück ins Interim Camp (5400m), wo uns ein LKW abholte und zurück nach Tingri (4300m) brachte. Nach einer kurzen Nacht fuhren wir um 2 Uhr morgens zur tibetisch nepalesischen Grenze und weiter nach Kathmandu, wo wir schließlich am Abend eintrafen.

Es folgenten ein paar Tage in Kathmandu, wo wir gutes Essen, die erste (heiße) Dusche seit sechs Wochen und ein warmes Klima genossen.

BASE CAMP - ORGANISATION - ASIAN TREKKING

The logistics for travelling to and back from the base-camp, visas, climbing permit and the kitchen in the base-camp was organised by Asian Trekking. Our cook "Lakpa" Pasang and his assistants Nema and Nuri did an incredible job in feeding seven hungry climbers for five weeks at 5700m. The other members of the group who shared the facilities in ABC with us were Mette and Jakob from Denmark and Rob from the USA.

Die Logist der An- und Abreise com bzw. zum Basislager, Visas, Besteigungserlaubnis und die Küche im Basislager wurde von Asian Trekking organisiert. Unser Koch "Lakpa" Pasang und seine Gehilfen Nema und Nuri leisteten unglaubliche Arbeit als sie sieben hungrige Bergsteiger fünf Wochen lang auf 5700m durchfütterten. Die anderen Gruppenmitglieder, die die Einrichtungen im ABC mit uns teilten waren Mette and Jakob von Dänemark und Rob aus der USA.

17.03. Last trip to the Alps

I just got back to Austria. Before going home I stopped in the alps to do some climbing. A nice but cold day in the Dachstein area in Austria. Snow and ice turned the climb into a bit of an adventure ...

15.03. Goodbye Exeter

On Thursday I will drive from Exeter, UK down to Austria. I still need to finalise my packing in Austria before I fly out to Kathmandu on March 23.

Today, Wednesday, my collegues, friends and bosses from Psychology came along to the pub and to Wagamama to see me off before I go back to Austria and Cho Oyu. I was impressed by the turnout of people who came along and very much enjoyed the evening first having drinks and then eating out.

The IPSIS flag will remind me of this lovely evening and all the wishes and supportive words I was given. Thank you so much!

Feb 2007

Our barrels sponsored by Ybbstaler have arrived. It was quite adventurous to the last minute if all four of them would fit inside my dad's Passat VW... My dad just made it ... (Thanks for picking them up!) Now we still need to fix handels on them and some lockers.

Stormy weekend with Oliver, testing our equipment in the Niederen Tauern in Austria. Most of our equipment has arrived by now. About 100km/h wind with uncomforable gusts, -8°C and barely any snow which made it hard to put up our tent ... The hanging stove proved to be useful even in the tent shaken by the wind. On the picture below you can see Oliver after taking down the tent in the moning. The thin snow cover and mostly hard as ice made us use crampons. It was quite an experience to walk on crampons with expedition shoes that are 3 sizes larger than my normal size ...

Finally the new expedition shoes have arrived. Pretty big but warm!

Franz will be our 4th expedition team member. Today Oliver, Franz and I did the Wildes Gamseckersteig in Lower Austria while discussing further details of our expedition. Läxel could not be here since he lives in Germany.

I have booked my flights to Nepal. I will fly to Kathmandu on March 23 and come back on May 21, 2007.

Ulli Just will join me on the Annpurna Trek before the expedition!

19/11/06 Fixing the expedition!

Läxel comes form Germany and Oliver from Bruck to my place near Vienna in order to fix our expedition and the schedule. Now we will need to start fighing the battle of finding equipment. We still need high altitude tents, expeditions shoes, duvet gloves, stoves etc.

Läxel reist aus Deutschland und Oliver aus Bruck zu mir nach NÖ an und wir fixieren unsere Expedition! Nun folgt die Materialschlacht ... noch fehlen einige Ausrüstungsgegenstände wie Zelte, Expeditionsschuhe, Dauenenhandschuhe, Kocher etc.
